More about Luxor

Luxor is known as the world's greatest open-air museum. The ancient Egyptian monuments located here are incomparable in number and significance. Amongst the most famous are the Luxor Temple, the Karnak Temple Complex, the necropolises of the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens, and the Colossi of Menmon. The Luxor Temple is one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Egypt. It was built over 3400 years ago, and dedicated to the god Amun-Re. The temple features a huge pylon gateway, two obelisks (nicknamed Cleopatra's Needles), and a Hypostyle Hall with 134 columns. Just a few kilometres away from the Luxor Temple is Karnak, which is probably the largest religious complex in the world. It was originally dedicated to Amun-Re, but over time other gods were also added, including Osiris, Isis, Horus, and Set. The complex consists of a massive number of temples, chapels, pylons, and obelisks. The Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens are two adjacent necropolises that were used for the burial of Pharaohs and their consorts during the New Kingdom period (1550-1070 BC). The Valley of the Kings is especially famous for its many tombs, including that of Tutankhamun. The Colossi of Memnon are two massive stone statues located on either side of the Nile River. They are each 18 metres high and weigh 720 tonnes. The statues depict Amenhotep III, who ruled during Dynasty XVIII (1390-1352 BC). The city itself is a delight to explore; visitors can wander its narrow streets and small squares on foot or by taxi, taking in the sights and sounds of this lively cultural center. Horse-drawn carriages are also available for tourists who want to enjoy a ride through Luxor's beautiful streets. Make the most of your time in Luxor by taking advantage of our selection of guided tours, day trips and activities with English-speaking guides.
